It is commonly thought that the
beautiful lawn that you get from easy organic lawn care can
only be achieved if you hire a professional lawn care service
to take care of it for you, but the truth is it doesn't matter
whether you want to do organic lawn care or use methods that
are traditional there are some simple things that you can do to
keep your lawn healthy and weed free.
Care of Your Soil
Before spring arrives and during the early fall there are
some important but easy steps that you need to take to make
sure that the soil underneath your lawn stays healthy. Over
time your soil can get compacted and cause your grass to become
root bound. One of the things that you can do to solve this
problem is to pull plugs out of your grass which increases
aeration. You can go to any rental store and find machines that
will pull these plugs out of your grass. Or if you don't wish
to do it yourself you can also call up a lawn company, and they
will come out a couple times a year to do this for you. No
matter if you choose to do it or you have the lawn company do
it, the plugs need to be left on the lawn so that they can
break down and provide nutrients to your lawn which will help
it to grow.
Another thing you can do to take care of your lawn for the
spring and early fall is to check the soils nutrient properties
and find out what might be lacking. You can find simple soil
testing kits at any garden supply store that will give you the
specific nutrients that your soil may be lacking. After you
have completed the test, you should go to the store and
purchase the specific fertilizer that meets the lawns
deficiency requirements. If when you are placing the fertilizer
on your lawn, some of it falls on your sidewalk or driveway,
you should make sure that it gets swept back on the lawn so it
doesn't get wasted or run into the sewer with rainfall.
Taking Care of
Pests
There are some pests that need to be taken care of in lawn
care such as grubs. In the spring, a section of grass should be
pulled up to check if there are grubs in the root system. If
there are, one solution to this is to buy nemotodes from a
garden supply store or catalogue. Nemotodes are microscopic
worms that will kill the grub larvae so that the grubs never
are able to affect the roots.
In order to kill other pests, shrubs and trees should be
planted around the yard to attract birds that will eat these
insects. In addition, ladybugs and green lacewings can be
bought from garden supply stores which will also help to fight
destructive insects from destroying the lawn.
