Organic Lawn Care
You can achieve organic lawn care
simply by using some common organic lawn care products that you
can buy from many garden supply stores or catalogs. The main
purpose that people are seeking when they talk of organic lawn
care, is the ability to create a lawn that is healthy without
using chemicals that are harmful to humans and animals. This is
a really great option because unlike with chemical fertilizers
and pesticides you have to stay off your lawn for 24 hours, but
with organic fertilizers this is not so. So it only makes sense
that you would want to use organic earth friendly products.
Using Nature to Its Fullest
Part of organic lawn care, which is free, is to try to make
use of animals and insects that are already around your yard to
try to keep your lawn healthy. If you have a lawn that is
surrounded by trees and bushes, then you're more likely to have
birds which will nest in the bushes and eat the
harmful insects. If you put more bushes and trees around your
lawn it can attract more wildlife which can help to keep down
the insect population.
You can also add insects are helpful in that they will
eliminate the harmful ones. If you search in organic lawn care
stores you can often find ladybugs and green lacewings which
are very helpful. You can also buy nematodes, which are a
microscopic worm that will heat grub larva so they don't grow
into grubs which damage the roots of your grass. You can find
these in your garden supply stores and catalogs as well.
If you're going to take care of your lawn organically the
need to know how to cut your grass as well. Many people think
that you should keep your grass at 2 inch level
but the truth is you should only cut at
the short once in the spring and the last cut of the year in
the fall. By cutting it short these two times in the year help
to reduce the chance of fungus that can damage your grass by
cutting off the tops where it would grow. The rest of the year
you should try keeping your grass a little longer, probably to
around 3 to 3 1/2 inches. The reason for this is that longer
grass has a stronger root system and will help to shade out
weeds that require a greater amount of sunlight to sprout.
Another thing you need to know about cutting your lawn is
that the blades should always be sharp. You should always try
to make sure that your grass is cut as cleanly as possible. If
you make ragged cuts it can allow fungi and harmful diseases to
form an harm your lawn. You also never want to cut the lawn
when it's wet, as this will increase your chances of making a
jagged cut. So always make sure that you mow your lawn when it
is dry.
